The Oklahoma legislature sent Governor Brad Henry a very destructive and mean-spirited anti-immigration bill, Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007, HB 1804. This bill promises to open the doors to wide-spread discrimination in the state, as well as opening up the state government to a host of potential lawsuits. They need your help to stop this hateful bill from becoming law!

According to the National immigration Law Center (NILC), HB 1804 Raises a Host of Legal Questions;

- Discriminates Against Lawfully Present Immigrants

- Intrudes on Children’s Right to Attend School

- Criminalizes good Samaritans, police, ambulance drivers, teachers and others

- Undermines an Investment in Oklahoma’s Future by Repealing In-State Tuition for Immigrants

- Limits Access to Licenses Based on a State or Local Agency’s “Suspicion” About an Individual’s Immigration Status

- Conflicts with Federal Laws 'Benefit Eligibility' Requirements

- Requires participation in the Basic Pilot Program - A New Hire Verfication System that

Preempts Federal Law

- Conflicts with and Undermines the Federal Government’s Tax Law Requirements

- Unnecessarily Impedes Access to Services for Eligible U.S. Citizens

- Jeopardizes Public Health through Discriminatory Practices

Although the governor has given no clear indication of how he would respond, the bill is expected to cross his desk this week. As of Friday April 20th, the governor has ten days to act. Time is short, so please call TODAY!

WHEN: Tuesday, April 24, 2007

HOW: Follow the instructions below to connect to Governor Henry's office. Once connected, tell him that this bill will not bring any positive solutions to his state and will only bring negative consequences.

I urge Governor Brad Henry to put an end to the mean-spirited anti-immigration bill, Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007, HB 1804. This bill promises to open the doors to wide-spread discrimination in the state, and is counterproductive to its economic development.

According to the National immigration Law Center (NILC), HB 1804 raises significant legal questions that you should consider before making your final decision.

H.B. 1804:

The House of Representatives in Washington has already laid out a strategy for comprehensive immigration reform. I believe that local law enforcement-only measures like HB 1804, will do nothing to fix our broken immigration system and that a federal comprehensive approach to immigration reform is the only practical solution. Please veto HB 1804.

Thank you.

‘License to discriminate'
Immigration legislation might be a ...

Hispanic advocates to urge veto by Henry.

By Judy Gibbs Robinson
Staff Writer

The council Gov. Brad Henry appointed to advise him on Hispanic issues will ask him to veto an immigration bill expected to receive final legislative approval today.

The Governor's Advisory Council on Latin American and Hispanic Affairs voted unanimously Monday to send Henry a letter expressing grave concerns about House Bill 1804.

The proposed legislation attempts to limit illegal immigration by implementing state requirements and penalties.

[...]

Arthur Valdez of Oklahoma City called the bill "a license to discriminate.” The local League of United Latin American Citizens has received complaints from legal residents who were barred from work and Oklahoma Minutemen stopping people to ask where they were born, he said.

"It's happening now and it hasn't even passed,” Valdez said.

[...]

There is a veto proof margin on this bill, but Henry should at the least line item veto the most egregious parts.

Oklahoma HB 1804

Please understand the most important aspect of the entire issue. ILLEGAL. There is a proper way for those wanting to live in America to do so. Also understand that people become upset about the immigration issue when those wanting to come to the USA are not willing to BECOME Americans. That means learning ENGLISH, applying for citizenship the proper way, and living within our laws.

Yes, everyone deserves to create a better life for themselves and their families. But please, do it within the frameworks that are in place.

Amen!

I completely agree with Leta’s comments. I hope that Texas passes a similar law. The best way to tackle the immigration problem is to remove the incentive. If there are no jobs or government benefits then the people that are here illegally will simply deport themselves and apply for citizenship through the legal existing channels. I would love to see the federal government eliminate the anchor baby law to further reduce illegal immigration. Oklahoma is defiantly OK in this Texan’s point of view.

Leta couldn't have put it

Leta couldn't have put it any better. If you want to become an American do it in the proper way. The first step is to learn to speak English.
God Bless Oklahoma's governor. We need more govennors like him.

Wow..

Learn to speak English? Really? Because somehow I don't remember the Europeans learning Cherokee, Creek, Apache, or Navajo. In fact, they pretty much came in then uprooted and destroyed the preexisting culture and way-of-life that was already here.

Are you really that afraid that McDonalds will start serving tacos in lieu of the Big Mac? Perhaps we should also pass a law against Wal-Mart employees, as they are destroying the culture of rural America and the local grocer.

Your first step should be pulling your head out of whatever dark hole it is in. After that you might take into consideration how protectionist policies have always stunted economic growth. Take a look at China. The only reason their economy is finally picking up is because the government is beginning to realize that building walls around a country is only useful for creating a coffin in which it can die.
