Dr. Kathy McCallie was honored and celebrated today by her congregation, family and friends from throughout the Oklahoma City metro area, upon the 20th anniversary of her ordination. A concert tribute was held in the church she has pastored for the past 10 years, during which she was given $15,000 for a sabbatical, May 15 - Sept. 15, 2007. The funds were raised by the congregation and the wider community with which Rev. Kathy has built strong ties through her work for GLBT rights, feminism and peace. Church of the Open Arms is part of the United Church of Christ denomination and on its webpage describes itself as "an inclusive, justice-seeking community." The church offers commitment ceremonies for gay and lesbian couples. A full color booklet documenting her 10 years with Church of the Open Arms was produced, in which many of those touched by her work and life gave testimony to their love and respect. The ceremony was highlighted by music from church members, including a rousing rendition of "Operator" ("Operator, information, get me Jesus on the line...") and a prayer by Rev. Dr. Scott Jones of Pastor Cathedral of Hope, also in Oklahoma City. ( categories: )
