Oklahomans Urge Veto Override by Congress

Reggie Cervantes, Oklahoma Chapter President of APUHC (American Patients for Universal Health Care), is leading a protest at the South Plaza of the Oklahoma Capitol on Wednesday, October 17th, 2007 at 12 noon. Cervantes, a 9-11 volunteer rescue worker, was featured in the Michael Moore movie, SICKO. She has recently moved to Oklahoma City after not being able to be treated for health issues in New York. Since then, she was able to receive medical care for her children, ages 8 and 10, and herself for PTSD and other ailments she developed after working at the World Trade Center.

Last week Bush issued a presidential proclamation on Monday making it "Child Health Day" then he vetoed SCHIP two days later. Cervantes said "This veto is an injustice to our children, the smallest, most innocent and clearly vulnerable in our society. We cant leave them unprotected without health care, it's just wrong."

"We want to send a message to the White House that Oklahomans love their children and want them to have access to health care through SCHIP. We want to urge all the members of Congress to stand up and override President Bush’s veto", added Cervantes.

Protests to override the veto of SCHIP will be taking place on Wednesday nationwide. Cervantes concluded "Let your voice be heard, let our children’s voices be heard".
